Lois Hole Award for Editorial Excellence

Awards are presented to Alberta book publishers in recognition of outstanding editorial work on books published during the 2008 calendar year. More than one prize may be awarded by the jury.

This award is named in honour of Lois Hole for her dedication books, libraries literacy, and her respect for editors. Her devotion to the cultural life of our province remains an inspiration to all Albertans.

Eligibility

    1. Publishers do not have to be members of the BPAA to apply but must meet eligibility guidelines as follows. A publisher will:
    • have its chief office of business located in Alberta;
    • be at least 80% beneficially owned by Canadian citizens or landed immigrants, or be fully owned and controlled by Canadian institutions or associations that are 80% controlled by Canadian citizens or landed immigrants;
    • have effective managerial and editorial control by people domiciled in Alberta, and financial control in the hands of people living in Canada; and
    • publish original Canadian books as a primary and not an occasional activity.
    1. Books entered must have been published between January 1 and December 31, 2008.
    2. Revised editions are eligible only if significant editorial changes have been made.

    Criteria

    Entries will be judged on their success in accomplishing stated project goals as described in the 200-word synopsis and in completing the process of bringing a book to its audience. Size, complexity, accuracy, professionalism and sensitivity are all characteristics to be considered in determining the success of the editorial process but a demonstration of understanding what is necessary and the method of achieving that goal will be the primary determining factor.

Submissions

  1. Submissions shall consist of the completed entry form, 4 copies of the title submitted, 4 copies of all supporting documents, and a cheque or money order for an administration fee of $25.
  2. Submissions should include: a 200-word synopsis of the project; original manuscript, marked copies, or equivalent; and 4 copies of the finished book.

    Note: All materials should be labelled and/or annotated so that the jurors understand their significance. Jurors will not be expected to do line-by- line analysis of the work done so submissions should be clear and concise.

The deadline for nominations is Tuesday, January 27, 2009.
